Crozier, Bullpen Too Much For ‘Fish
(Waldorf, MD – July 26, 2010) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (9-8, 45-42) suffered a sixth defeat in eight games as Bridgeport lost to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (13-5, 54-34) by a score of four-to-three.
Paul Oseguera (3-3) tossed six innings of four run baseball in taking the loss. The southpaw allowed six hits and five passes while striking out eight Blue Crabs. Miguel Saladin delivered two perfect frames and fanned three for the losing side.
Connor Robertson (6-3) provided a quality start as the righthander served six innings and surrendered two earned runs. The Bluefish produced four hits and one walk off Robertson while fanning six times. The bullpen trio of Jason Waddell, Ryan Speier, and Jim Ed Warden hurled three shutout innings with three strikeouts. Ed Warden collected his 18th save of the season by pitching a flawless ninth,
Bridgeport got on the board in the top of the first. Adam Greenberg reached on an infield single to second. On a pickoff attempt, with nobody out, Robertson’s throw was errant and traveled down the rightfield line to allow Greenberg to advance a base. After two outs had been recorded, Phelps walked. Greenberg ran on Phelps’ payoff pitch and stole third. The catchers’ toss was launched past Patrick Osborn at third which allowed Greenberg to score on the throwing error. Bridgeport had a one-to-nothing lead.
The Bluefish put another run across in the second. The sixth homer of the season, provided by Luis Rodriguez to left, extended the advantage to two.
Southern Maryland responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth off Oseguera. Matt Craig started the rally with a leadoff walk. After a strikeout of Osborn, Eric Crozier scalded a two-run shot over the centerfield wall to tie the game at two. After Osborn’s plate appearance, the third baseman was tossed for arguing. One pitch into Eric Crozier’s at-bat, Manager, Butch Hobson, was also shown the gate.
The Blue Crabs pushed one more runner across in the fifth. Jeremy Owens served a one-out triple down the rightfield line. After Casey Benjamin was plunked by a pitch, Matt Craig doubled to rightcenter. Owens scored, but when Benjamin tried to come to the plate, Rodriguez got tackled but held onto the ball.
Another runner crossed the plate for the home team in the sixth. With nobody out, Shaun Cumberland walked and Jamar Hill tripled to rightcenter. The knock brought the fourth run across and gave Southern Maryland a two-run cushion.
Luis Lopez led off the seventh with a solo bomb to left. His third jolt of the season cut the deficit to one; however, the Bluefish were unable to knot the contest against the Blue Crabs bullpen.
