Riordan Continues String Of Strong Starts
(Bridgeport, CT– July 7, 2017) – On Friday Night out at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard, The Bridgeport Bluefish (3-2, 44-31) defeated the visiting New Britain Bees (2-2, 28-46) by the score of 5-3, taking the opener of a three-game weekend series.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Cory Riordan (7-3) registered for the victory, pitching seven innings while allowing three runs (two earned runs) on six hits. The Connecticut Native also struck out 10 and did not walk a batter. New Britain Starting Pitcher Nick Greenwood (0-2) suffered the loss, surrendering five runs on eight hits (one home run) in just four innings of work, walking two and striking out one.
Riordan, a 2017 Atlantic League All-Star, struck out the side in the top of the first inning and would go five and one-third innings before allowing his first baserunner on a Jamar Walton single in the sixth, ending his bid for perfection.
In the bottom of the first, Jose Cuevas and Daniel Fields would each drive in a run with a base hit to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team, and the ‘Fish would add three more in the fourth inning for a 5-0 cushion on a Jonathan Galvez home run, his tenth of the season and 42nd Run Batted In, both tops on the ballclub, and a two-RBI double off the bat of 2017 Liberty Division All-Star D’Arby Myers.
Riordan would run into trouble in the top of the seventh, as New Britain would scratch out three runs to narrow the gap to 5-3. With a two-run lead in the eighth inning, Bluefish reliever Elvin Ramirez worked out of a jam by stranding runners at the corners, striking out the potential go-ahead run in Conor Bierfeldt to end the inning and neutralize the threat. In the top half of the ninth inning, 2017 Liberty Division All-Star David Carpenter would set down the side in order for his Atlantic League-leading 27th save of the campaign.
