Bluefish Strikeout 14 Barnstormers In Victory

Brewer Fires Six Scoreless Innings, Striking Out A Season-High Nine Batters


(Bridgeport, CT– June 13, 2017) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (29-23) defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers (28-23) 3-1 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game midweek series in the Magic City. The Bluefish return to the Nutmeg State and kick off their six-game homestand on a positive note.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Charles Brewer (4-1) was very impressive in earning the win, tossing six scoreless innings on just four hits allowed, striking out a season-best nine hitters, The right hander notches his second quality start in 2017, and is now tied with Rainy Lara, Chris Rearick, and Cory Riordan for the club lead in victories. Lancaster Starting Pitcher Jarret Leverett (4-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering three runs (two earned runs) on six hits, walking two and striking out three. David Carpenter retired all three batters in faced in the top half of the ninth inning to secure his Atlantic League leading 20th save of the season.

Bridgeport took a 1-0 lead against Leverett in the home half of the fourth inning on a two-out run scoring single to right field off the bat of Sean Burroughs, plating Luis Hernandez with the game’s first run after he led off the frame with a ground-rule double into the left field corner. The ‘Fish added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI fielder’s choice from Angel Rosa and a run-scoring base knock by Hernandez. Lancaster cut the deficit to 3-1 in the top of the seventh inning on a one-out solo home run to left by Sean Halton against reliever Drake Britton, his 11th roundtripper on the 2017 campaign. Thar was all the visitors could muster on the evening, as the quartet of Brewer, Britton, Delcarmen, and Carpenter combined to strikeout 14 Barnstormers on the evening, the second highest output by the Bridgeport pitching staff this year, with the season-high coming back on May 30th, when the ‘Fish struck out 15 New Britain Bees in a 4-1 victory over their in-state rivals at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Hernandez led the way for the Bluefish with a pair of hits, his 12th multi-hit game of the season.

Bridgeport continues their series with the Lancaster Barnstormers at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Wednesday, June 14th. First Pitch is scheduled for 7:12 P.M.
