'Fish Rally In 9th Inning To Sweep Ducks

Another Quality Start For Brewer, Nina Drives Home A Pair

(Central Islip, NY– September 10, 2017) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (33-31, 74-60) defeated the Long Island Ducks (35-28, 71-62) 4-1 at Bethpage Ballpark on Sunday afternoon to complete a sweep of the three-game weekend series against their Liberty Division and Cross-Sound rival. The Bluefish will begin the second leg of their six-game road trip on Tuesday night when they head to the Lone Star State of Texas to begin a three-game series versus the reigning Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Champion Sugar Land Skeeters at Constellation Field.

Bridgeport starting pitcher Charles Brewer tallied a no decision in the matchup, allowing just one run on five hit across six innings pitched, striking out four. The right-hander tallied his 11th quality start in 25 appearances overall, tying him with Rainy Lara and Cory Riordan for the most on the ballclub. Long Island starting pitcher Jake Dunning also did not factor in the game’s final outcome after tossing six scoreless innings on four hits surrendered, walking three and striking out five.

Trailing 1-0 in the top half of the seventh inning, the ‘Fish loaded the bases with two out for Welington Dotel, who proceeded to get hit by a pitch thrown from Ducks reliever Rob Rogers, allowing Santiago Nessy to cross the plate with the tying-run to even the score at one. In the top of the ninth while facing losing pitcher Amalio Diaz (5-5), Bridgeport again put three runners on base on a pair of back-to-back errors committed by Ruben Gotay and an intentional walk issued to Andrew Lambo. Gustavo Molina put Bridgeport ahead 2-1 with a one-out run-scoring infield single that plated Jose Cuevas. Looking for insurance, that is exactly what the visitors got in their very next plate appearance as Angelys Nina followed Molina and drove in Dotel and Lambo by way of a two-run base knock to give the Bluefish some much needed breathing room at 4-1. In the bottom of the ninth, Manny Delcarmen put to rest any thoughts a rally on the part of the Flock by retiring the side in order for his eighth save of the season and second in the series, making a winner out of fellow reliever Elvin Ramirez (5-2), who did not allow a run in two impressive innings of work. Nina and Nessy each had a pair of hits for the Bluefish, who came from behind to win a game for the 29th time on the 2017 campaign and also do so for the second time in three games played this weekend against the Ducks.
