Severino Strikes Out Seven Across Five Scoreless Innings

(Central Islip, NY– September 9, 2017) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (32-31, 73-60) defeated the Long Island Ducks (35-27, 71-61) 4-0 at Bethpage Ballpark on Saturday night and have now taken the first two games of the three-game weekend series. The Bluefish pitching staff record their eighth shutout of the season and second versus the Ducks, with the last against their Ferry Cup rival taking place on May 24th, a 2-0 victory in game one of a doubleheader at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard that lasted seven innings of play.

Bridgeport starting pitcher Dominic Severino (1-0) picked up his first win in a Bluefish uniform after firing five scoreless innings on just four hits allowed, walking one and striking out seven while tossing a wild pitch. Long Island starting pitcher Bruce Kern (0-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up two runs on three hits in one and two-thirds innings on the mound while striking out one but the right-hander was removed from the ballgame after just eight batters faced due to injury.

Bridgeport took a 2-0 advantage against Kern in the top half of the second inning on a two-out, two-run single to the opposite field in left off the bat of Ozney Guillen, plating Jonathan Galvez and Andrew Lambo after they reached on back-to-back base knocks to begin the rally. In the top of the fourth, Angelys Nina bounced into a double play with runners at the corners and nobody out, enabling Lambo to score after he reached base with a leadoff walk as the visitors extended the lead to 3-0. Lambo was in on the action once again in the top of the eighth, driving home Jose Cuevas with a two-out RBI base hit to give the ‘Fish some breathing room at 4-0. After five solid innings from Severino, the bullpen trio of Zac Grotz, Wander Perez, and Manny Delcarmen tossed four innings of relief without allowing a run and striking out four in the process as Bridgeport improved to 73-60 on the campaign, the best overall record in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Lambo led the way for the Bluefish with three hits while reaching base safely in all four plate appearances on the evening. Photo provided courtesy of Kenneth Arrington.
