Skeeters Hang On To Defeat Bluefish

Seven Scoreless Innings For Riordan

 

(Bridgeport, CT– June 16, 2017) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (31-24) were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters (25-29) 2-1 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in the opener of a three-game Father’s Day Weekend series in the Park City. The Skeeters improve to 7-8 in one-run games, while the Bluefish drop to 6-4

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Cory Riordan registered a no-decision, firing seven scoreless innings on just three hits allowed, striking out five. The right-hander notched his team-best eighth quality start in ten appearances on the mound in 2017.Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Michael Nix (5-5) earned the win after not allowing a run in seven innings pitched, striking out five. Dustin Richardson struck out both batters he faced in the bottom half of the ninth inning to register his third save of the season.

Sugar Land took a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth inning when Kevin Ahrens reached on a two-out throwing error by third baseman Jose Cuevas that pulled Sean Burroughs off the bag at first, allowing Derek Miller to cross the plate after he reached on a leadoff walk to begin the frame surrendered by losing pitcher Zac Grotz (1-2). The visitors picked up a huge insurance run in the top of the ninth when former Bluefish Josh Prince drove home Albert Cordero with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 in favor of the Skeeters. Daniel Fields cut the deficit to 2-1 in the home half of the ninth with an opposite-field double to left center that scored Sean Burroughs after he began the rally with a leadoff single against Julio DePaula. After Bryan Pounds dropped a popup off the bat of Santiago Nessy, the ‘Fish had the tying run just 90 feet away and the winning run at first with only one man out. Left hander Dustin Richardson was summoned out of the bullpen by Sugar Land Skipper Gary Gaetti to face fellow southpaw Daniel Lambo, and he proceeded to strike out him out swinging. With Bridgeport down their final out of the night, pinch-runner D’Arby Myers stole second base, moving the winning run into scoring position. The comeback would fall just short as Richardson struck out Angelys Nina swinging on a rising fastball, and the Skeeters were able to hang on by the skin of their teeth. Six different Bluefish players each collected a single hit in the losing effort.
