Patriots Take Series With Win Over Bluefish

Burroughs Extends On-Base Streak To Five Consecutive Games

(Bridgewater, NJ– May 29, 2017) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (20-18) were defeated by the Somerset Patriots (24-14) 5-1 at TD Bank Ballpark in the finale of a four-game series on Memorial Day. The Patriots take three of four games played between the Liberty Division foes, extending their lead to four games over Bridgeport for First Place in the First Half of the Liberty Division Standings.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Jonathan Albaladejo (3-3) was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits in five and one-third innings pitched, striking out six. Somerset Starting Pitcher Lucas Irvine (1-1) picked up the win, allowing just one run on four hits in seven strong innings, walking one and striking out two.

Somerset took a quick 1-0 lead against Albaladejo in the bottom half of the first inning on an RBI groundout by Jerry Sands, plating Scott Kelly after he singled and stole second base to open up the frame. Bridgeport tied the game at one in the top of the second off Irvine when Jonathan Galvez drove home Jose Gil with an opposite-field run-scoring base knock to right, but Galvez was then thrown out at second base trying to stretch out the single into a double. The Patriots made it 3-1 in their favor in the home half of the third on an RBI infield single by Justin Pacchioli and a run-scoring double by Sands, both coming with two-men out. Sands now leads the Atlantic League in two-base hits with 14 and Runs Batted In with 38. Somerset added two more insurance runs for a 5-1 cushion on an RBI single by Tyler Bortnick in the sixth and a sacrifice fly from Pacchioli in the seventh. The four-run advantage was more than enough for the home team, as the pitching trio of Irvine, Kyler Newby, and Ronnie Shaban combined to retire the final 17 consecutive Bridgeport batters they faced over a span of five and two-thirds innings overall. Gil led the way for the Bluefish with a pair of hits as the visitors tallied just four hits in total in the contest.

Bridgeport returns to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday, May 30th, when they welcome in their Nutmeg State rival New Britain Bees for a three game midweek series.
